James Howard was born in 1863 in Sandhurst, Victoria.2,1,3 
He married Annie Victoria Williams, daughter of John Williams and Mary Ann Crapp, on 13 March 1893 in North Melbourne, Victoria.3,2 
He died on 28 December 1939 in Lara, Victoria.4,2

Story

James Martin was born in Sandhurst (Bendigo) in 1863. He was the fourth child of Janet or Jessie, and the second child of Richard.1,2,5
 
Early life was hard for James. His mother Janet was previously married to Alexander Doig who left her and their two daughters. It is believed Janet never married Richard Howard, but they had four children, three boys, plus one girl who died. Richard deserted the family in 1869 when the youngest son was two years old. When Janet died destitute the following year, the three boys were put into three different orphanages. James was sent to Sunbury.

Neither James's death registration nor his marriage registration has the correct information regarding his parents.5
 
Marriage and Family
Annie Victoria Williams and James Howard were married at a parsonage in North Melbourne on 13 March 1893. They had seven children between 1894 and 1905.

At the time of their marriage, James was a farmer and Annie was a dressmaker.2,3

The children were all born in Tallygaroopna or Congupna. At least four, Harry/Henry, Ivor, Clariss/Clarice and Cyril, attended Tallygaroopna West school.6,2,7,8,9,10
 
Family Life
James farmed initially in Congupna. Some records have them living in Congupna and some have them living in Tallygaroopna, even around the same time.2,11,12,13
 
In 1910 they moved to a place about 30 km north of Geelong, near Little River.

Different records have them living variously in Little River, Balliang, Ripley, Brooklyne/Brooklyn and Glenara.

In the electoral rolls from 1912 to 1937, James is shown as living at Brooklyne, Little River, and Annie is shown as living at Ripley, Little River.

Ripley is a village on the northern edge of Balliang, about 30 km from Geelong.

In livestock sales, James is shown at Brooklyne (or Brooklyn), Little River. Perhaps Brooklyn(e) was the name of his property.

In 1919 James is shown at 'Glenara', perhaps the name of their homestead. In 1925, son Ivor is shown as living at Glenara, Little River.14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,2,28,29,30,31,32

The six sons followed James into farming. Henry Lawrence first appears on the electoral rolls as a farmer in Little River in 1915. Ivor first appears in 1916, Cyril William in 1919, Stanley Livingstone in 1924, Gilbert James in Lara in 1925, and Morton Alexander in Lara in 1927.16,17,18,20,21,23
 
James Howard died at the home of son Harry in Lara on 28 December 1939, aged 76. He was buried at Rothwell cemetery on 29 December.4,2,33
 
HOWARD.- On the 28th December 1939, at the residence of his son (Mr Harry Howard), Forest road, Lara, James the dearly loved husband of Annie Victoria Howard of Little River and devoted father of Harry, Ivor, Clariss (Mrs J Jones), Cyril, Stan, Gilbert and Morton, aged 76 years.34
 
HOWARD.- The Friends of the late Mr James Howard, of Little River, are respectfully informed that his remains will be interred in the Rothwell Cemetery.

The funeral cortege will leave the residence of his son (Mr Harry Howard), Forest road, Lara, THIS DAY (Friday, the 29th December, 1930), at 3 o'clock pm.33
