Story | |
Maria Jane Carey was born in Creswick on 20 August 1857. She was the second child of Mary Ann and John. Her third name, Carey, came from her maternal grandmother, born Mary Ann Carey Cloke.3,2
Most of the family moved from Creswick to Shepparton between February 1877 (when William Charles was buried in Creswick) and August (when John's Crown land application stated he lived in Shepparton). It is possible some of the older children travelled separately, or with John Joseph and his young family. The oldest child Maria was aged twenty and on her March 1878 marriage registration, gives her usual address as Creswick. The youngest child to move was Richard aged six.7,8,5
Marriage and Family Maria Jane Williams and Alexander Livingstone were married at the home of her parents in Mooroopna on 5 March 1878. They had ten children between 1878 and 1903, with one early death. Their first child was born three months after they married.4,2,9

The first three children were born in Mooroopna.
Around 1884, the family of five moved to Allendale, about 8 km north of Creswick, where the remaining seven children were born.11,12
Alexander continued working as a blacksmith, at the Berry United gold mine, about 9 km north of Allendale. Sons Arthur Ernest and Frank Stanley also later worked at the mine.13,11,14,15,16,17,18
